Congratulations to Eimear Gallagher who has been awarded The Patricia Tomkins Undergraduate Prize 2019.

Eimear is studying Physics with Astrophysics at Nottingham Trent University and is currently on an industrial placement year at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory space division (RAL Space) in the Millimetre Wave Technology Group. This year she has been working on the development of a heterodyne receiver for the Large Millimeter Telescope in Mexico. After completing her MSci she intends to pursue a PhD relating to her interest in radio astronomy and instrumentation, building on her experience of working with millimetre and sub millimetre wave technology.

She will give a short presentation on her work at a future RAS Ordinary Meeting (date to be confirmed).

The Patricia Tomkins Foundation

With a generous donation from the Patricia Tomkins Foundation the RAS awards a scheme of prizes and grants to encourage student interest in instrumentation science for astronomy and geophysics. The Tomkins undergraduate prize of £500 is awarded for excellent laboratory work on instrumentation undertaken as part of a course related to astronomy or geophysics.
