Kevin Govender of the Office of Astronomy for Development has been awarded the Edinburgh Medal, jointly with the International Astronomical Union, for their work using astronomy to drive education and social development worldwide.

The OAD was established at the South African Astronomical Observatory by the IAU in 2011 and Kevin Govender has since shown determination and leadership, establishing astronomy as a means of spreading global education and capacity-building. The medal will be presented to Kevin and IAU President Silvia Torres Peimbert at the Edinburgh Science Festival; they will respond with an address entitled “Astronomy for a better World” – nicely summing up the goals of the OAD and of the IAU in establishing the office.

A&G carried an interview with Kevin in the June 2016 issue.
