Visual impairment need not be a barrier to appreciating astronomical data and ideas.

Striking astronomical images offer a route to developing understanding of some of the big questions about the structure and origin of the universe. The Tactile Universe, a project set up by the University of Portsmouth, aims to develop resources to allow  people with visual impairments to appreciate astrophysics. They use three-dimensional models to show the sort of astrophysical information more usually rendered as colour and are working with the visually impaired community to develop ways to share their research.
